Influence

Childhood

He was born Clarence M. Mitchell on March 8, 1911.As Mitchell was growing up, he lived in a more diverse neighborhood but saw how African Americans were being treated.

Writing

Mitchell did a lot of writing growing up. He started writing his thoughts about the segregation between colored citizens and white citizens. Later on in his life, he wrote a book called "The Papers of Clarence Mitchell Jr." which was about his experience in these organizations and what type of things he's seen in the civil movement days.

Organizations

When he got older, he joined a lot of different organizations that had to do with helping black citizens being able to speak their mind and not to be discriminated. He was involved in organizations and groups that had to do with the Civil Rights movement. He was the director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Washington Bureau which helped colored people speak their mind and spread the message (about everyone being equal) by promoting themselves and telling others to get involved in helping move the movement.  He was also the legislative chairman of the Leadership Council on Civil Rights which helped move the civil rights movement.

Influence on Black History

Him being involved in organizations and writing about what was going on helped black citizens be able to vote, not be discriminated and be able to voice their opinion. The organizations he was involved in helped African Americans learn how to stand up for themselves and voice their opinions in certain things. His writings influenced people to start standing up and understand what was going on. If it wasn't for him, African Americans probably would've still been segregated today.
